2025 Mystery Medallion Quilt Challenge

Our 2025 Guild Challenge is a Mystery Medallion Quilt. Each month we will release directions for the next step.

Your Challenge is to use mostly fabric that you already have in your stash. Don’t buy anything! Seriously, at least 80% of your quilt should be fabric from your stash.

The center block size and border widths are suggestions, not mandates.

Month 1 – February

Choose a center medallion from 12 – 18 inches square finished. Your UNFINISHED square block should be from 12.5-18.5 inches.

This block could be a UFO, a new block you make for this purpose, or even just a pretty piece of fabric.

Month 2 – March

This first border around your center medallion should be 3-4″ wide and contain squares. Those squares could contain anything you choose. You can have all squares, just corner squares, or even random squares and the rest just plain fabric.

You may also have a small “cheater” border between the center medallion and the border of squares, if you choose.

Month 3 – April

At this point you need to decide if you want to set your medallion on point, or leave it straight on square. If you want it on point, set it on point now before or after adding this second border. You could also make your quilt rectangular at this point, if desired.

This second border around your center medallion should be 3-4″ wide and contain triangles. This could be any combination of triangles, half square triangles, flying geese, etc.

You may also have a small “cheater” border between the borders, if you choose.

Month 4 – May

The next border around your center medallion should be 4-6″ wide.

You also need to add some kind of applique to your quilt. Your applique may be machine applique, needle turn, or whatever type applique you like.

Months 5 & 6 – June and July

Take 2 months to complete the next border. It should use primarily half square triangles, up to 6″ wide at the maker’s discretion.
